Alzheimer Support Group Ministry

Introduction: The Alzheimer’s Support Group for Caregivers is a compassionate and nonjudgmental gathering of individuals who have similar responsibilities in caring for loved ones affected by Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Members share their experiences, as well as encourage and inspire one another. Along with any new information, they also share tips and resources that are relevant to group discussions.

Videos and guest speakers are means we employ to enhance knowledge and understanding of the different types of dementia; behaviors that care recipients may exhibit and strategies for achieving positive outcomes for care recipients. Essential self-care techniques for reducing unhealthy stress and burnout are incorporated into the sessions as well.

Our Mission: When caregivers and family members find themselves coping with dementia in a loved one, the mission statement of First Baptist Church of Highland Park can be fully realized. As a Bible Believing, Christ Centered, and Spirit led congregation, we strive to serve these families in a manner consistent with our beliefs; offering the same comfort that Jesus would and that the Holy Spirit does to those in need.

History: The Alzheimer’s Support group for caregivers ministry is in its second year at FBCHP. As a new ministry, it helps many church and community members in coping with the daily challenges of caregiving. It continues to grow and expand to include all types of information on the various aspects of dementia to include new studies, patient resources, causes, symptoms and treatment.

Services and Activities: In the Spring of 2024, the Alzheimer’s Support Group ministry invited two guest speakers to share information of interest to new and experienced caregivers. In April, Sharon Johnson, Co-Lead of Dementia Friendly America Northern Prince George’s County, gave an engaging presentation on resources and services available at the county and state levels and the national level.

In May, support group participants interacted with Reginald A. Lawson, author of “At Home with Dementia: Insights Caregiver Strategies for Smarter Decisions, Safer Outcomes and Improved Sanity.”

Scripture Reference: We also pray that you will be strengthened with all his glorious power so you will have all the endurance and patience you need. May you be filled with joy. Colossians 1:11 (NLT)

Birthday Fellowship Ministry

Mission: The mission of the Birthday Fellowship Ministry is to foster close communication and support among church members. Our primary goal is to encourage, pray for, and love one another, develop and maintain friendships through fellowship, support the church and community, and promote spiritual growth within our members.

Birthday Ministry Objective: In today's expanding church membership, one of the challenges is encouraging active participation in church activities. Many members may not know each other well, missing the warmth and connection necessary for a thriving church community.

To address this, the congregation is divided into birthday fellowships with the following primary purposes:

  • Member Connection: To help the pastor and church leaders maintain a personal and rewarding relationship with each member.
  • Fellowship and Growth: To unite all members into a fellowship that promotes spiritual growth and strengthens their commitment to the church's mission.
  • Active Participation: To provide opportunities for members to engage in the church program, fostering friendships and building interest in church activities.
  • Stewardship: To encourage scriptural giving through tithes and offerings, supporting the church's financial needs without relying on fundraising schemes (Malachi 3).

These fellowships aim to maintain genuine interest and closeness among members, visiting those in hospitals and rest homes, and ensuring ongoing communication within each group and the broader congregation.

Scripture Reference: John 15:12 (NLT) - This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you.

Introduction: Welcome to The Plug Young Adult Ministry at First Baptist Church of Highland Park. A "Plug" in the sense that it is used among many young adults relates to the one person who can hook you up with what you need! In John 14:6, Jesus says, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me." Jesus says, "I am the Plug, and no man comes to the Father but by me!" So, if you need joy, peace, purpose, salvation, or the connect to a new life, Jesus is The Plug.

Mission Statement: We aim to connect, disciple, support, and develop meaningful relationships with young adults 18-35. Our mission is to use relationships with one another, our gifts, and our testimonies to strengthen our relationships with God and each other through our ministry.

History: The First Baptist Church of Highland Park young adult ministry was relaunched in December 2013 as The Plug by a young adult charter group. In celebration of the relaunch, The Plug hosted an all-white worship service that included spoken word from Rev. Dr. Ayo Morton of the St. Paul Baptist Church in Richmond, VA and songs of praise from the new young adult choir, True Praise. Also, from this charter group was birthed a morning devotional call, young adult led and targeted worship services, unique bible studies, social media presence, and social activities used to establish and build a community of young adult believers. As The Plug continues to connect young adults for God's glory, the ministry looks forward to what God continues to do through the ministry for the First Baptist Church of Highland Park.

Sowing Ministry

Introduction:The traditions of quilt-making have been passed on through generations and continue today, however because of the direction our society has chosen to take, in elimination or re-writing much of our past, this beautiful art form and its important place in black history are slowly fading away and if we do not take responsibility for handing down from generation to generation as in the past, it is in danger of becoming extinct.

The history of quilting in Black American culture began as early as the 17th century, From thrown away scrap material from slave owner households, enslaved people used their ingenuity and talent to create quilts. They gathered together to cut, piece and stitch layers of fabric together making plain quilts for warmth and fancy quilts for display. It created a space for sharing skills and stories, sorrows and celebrations. As they developed a higher level of skill and craftsmanship, they began to view quilts as useful for accomplishing other purposes. As learning to read and write was prohibited, quilts quickly became a source of communication, teaching bible stories; and they served a political purpose as well. They became messengers that were enlisted in the collective journey toward liberation. Similar to how seemingly benign Negro spirituals like “Steal Away” were actually coded massages meant to guide people to freedom, quilts featured certain patterns to outline escape routes and mark places of refuge on the Underground Railroad. They became unspoken yet sophisticated mnemonic devices.

Following the end of slavery, quilts became a beloved part of the cultural and familial landscape for artistic expression. Instead of being hindered by the affront of having to use scraps to make basic bedtime necessities, it spurred innovation and creativity along with a determination to make something beautiful that restored a stripped sense of dignity.

Our Mission: The mission of this ministry is to re-kindle, to re-introduce, educate and excite people to learn quilting and take it to the next level by merging it with today’s technology—the possibilities are endless! Additionally, using this medium, we can fulfil our purpose by reaching out into our community providing quilts for warmth and comfort to those in need, putting the biblical principles we study in scripture into action.

Ministry History: This is the first year of the Sowing Seeds Sewing Ministry. The ministry started in August 2024, nineteen women, divided into two (2) classes. We meet every Tuesday, the first class meets from 9:30am to 12 noon, and the second class meets from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. In September, we added a third adult evening class that meets on Monday, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and a class for Girl Scouts (age 10 and up) that meets every other Thursday from 7:00;m to 8:30pm.

God blessed this ministry to be able to acquire 15 sewing machines for the church, 3 Accuquilts (cutting) machines as well as numerous necessary supplies and materials and storage needed to start the ministry.

Currently we have over 30 adults and 4 Girl Scouts meeting on these days and times. Prayer is an integral part of the program and the adult classes have currently produced over thirty (30) baby quilts that are designated to be given to babies that are prayed for during our baby dedications here at the church. Plans are in process to pass out these quilts to families in need and to hospital Newborn ICU’s. Additionally, we are now in the process of making lap quilts to be given to a local senior care facility. Most recently all three adult classed combined to make and present a quilt to our Senior Pastor for his birthday.

Services and Activities:

  1. This ministry provides the space and equipment for anyone who wishes, from our youth to seniors to learn to sew and to do so without having the expense of having to purchase sewing equipment. It provides an opportunity to fellowship and to share ideas, and it a time to come out and put the biblical principles we have learned into action.
  2. Through Community outreach, we are providing quilts for new babies and senior citizens, giving sewing members a real purpose for making the quilts that ties in with the mission of the church. We have some newly planned projects for 2025.
  3. Finally we provide the opportunity for our Girl Scouts to learn about the cultural heritage of quilting in the black community and its importance not only as an art form that is uniquely black but it’s role in the ante bellum south. This is a hands-on learning experience as they are receiving instruction on actual quilt making, as well learning how quilts served as a means of communication during slavery, and how they illustrated biblical stories were translated from the oral tradition cloth for those who could not read.

This ministry is open to the members of our community, to our church membership and all who desire to become involved. Our scripture reference is “Each one should use whatever gift he has to serve others, faithfully administering God’s Grace in its various forms. 1st Peter 4:10.

Titus 2:3-5 (NLT) - 3 Similarly, teach the older women to live in a way that honors God. They must not slander others or be heavy drinkers. Instead, they should teach others what is good. 4 These older women must train the younger women to love their husbands and their children, 5 to live wisely and be pure, to work in their homes, to do good, and to be submissive to their husbands. Then they will not bring shame on the word of God.
